Giant Lacewing - Polystoechotes punctata
Nearly a year from a previous sight, my dear friend has once again found and shared with me this rather elusive Lacewing. It was found in the same location too! It's sightings like this that give me hope that this specie is still going strong (in some capacity), and that we need to learn more about its behavior and lifecycle. Particularly as details on the latter are minimal, at time of writing. If more specimens of this Lacewing's larvae were easier to discover and monitor over time, it may spell out a multitude of knowledge to be gained over many a scientific journal publishing. At the moment, it seems that they remain elusive due to living beneath soil. Underground, they use their enlarged mandibles to carve into plant roots and feed on material that flows through them. This is quite a shift from the more common Lacewings whose larvae feed carnivorously on soft-bodied insects using their sickle shaped mandibles. Although different, it seems that the strategy finds success since adults are able to emerge into a B.C. summer and use their flight time to secure mates. Such is the goal of the beautiful specimen seen here, and yet its more likely to be mistaken for a Caddisfly or a Moth as it flits its net-veined wings into the night. Hopefully the future gives this insect a boost in renewed interest so that more can be learned about its behavior and lifecycle (especially given its fossilized lineage). Perhaps ideal egg-laying sites would be a good place to start, but with how short-lived the adults are, luck may be a factor.
Video was recorded August 20, 2024 in Squamish with an iPhone 12. Today's specimen has concealed its short abdomen beneath its head. With such large wings and hairs on its body plus a (possible) attraction to outside light, it's no wonder it is sometimes mistaken as a Moth on a porch.

Cost vs. Quality: What to Consider When Investing in Switchgear
In today’s energy-intensive world, switchgear plays a critical role in managing power distribution safely and efficiently. Whether you’re upgrading your industrial facility, building a commercial plant, or powering a large infrastructure project, choosing the right switchgear is not just a technical decision — it’s a strategic investment. One of the most common dilemmas buyers face is balancing cost vs. quality. So, how do you decide?
Understanding Switchgear: The Heart of Electrical Safety
Switchgear is a combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses, or circuit breakers used to control, protect, and isolate electrical equipment. Its primary role is to ensure the reliability and safety of your power system.
Types of switchgear include:
· Low-voltage switchgear (for commercial and residential use)
· Medium-voltage switchgear (typically for industrial applications)
· High-voltage switchgear (used in power transmission)
Investing in the right switchgear directly impacts operational continuity, personnel safety, and overall infrastructure reliability.
The True Cost of Cheap Switchgear:
While it’s tempting to opt for budget-friendly solutions, low-cost switchgear often comes with hidden risks and long-term expenses.
Inferior Material Quality
Cheaper models often use substandard materials that degrade faster, leading to frequent maintenance or early replacement.
Safety Hazards
Low-quality switchgear can result in arc faults, insulation failure, or overheating — putting workers and equipment at risk.
Increased Lifecycle Costs
Although the initial price may be low, the total cost of ownership (including downtime, repair, and energy inefficiency) is usually higher.
Limited Scalability and Customization
Budget systems are often rigid and harder to scale as your facility grows or needs change.
Why Quality Switchgear Pays Off
When you invest in premium switchgear, you’re not just buying a product — you’re buying peace of mind.
Enhanced Reliability
High-quality switchgear is engineered to perform in extreme conditions and handle high fault levels without compromising performance.
Superior Safety Standards
Reputable brands comply with international standards such as IEC, ANSI, or UL, reducing liability and improving workplace safety.
Ease of Maintenance
Well-built switchgear is modular and user-friendly, simplifying diagnostics and minimizing downtime during maintenance.
Energy Efficiency & Smart Capabilities
Modern switchgear includes IoT sensors, real-time monitoring, and predictive maintenance features, ensuring optimal energy use and proactive problem resolution.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Switchgear
When evaluating switchgear options, balance cost and quality by focusing on the following:
1. Application Requirements
Understand your voltage class, load types, and fault current ratings. Quality should match your operational demands.
2. Brand Reputation & Certification
Look for trusted brands with certifications like ISO 9001, CE, or IEC 62271. Positive reviews and case studies add credibility.
3. Lifecycle Costs
Don’t just compare sticker prices — consider maintenance, service availability, spare part costs, and expected lifespan.
4. Customization & Flexibility
Choose systems that can evolve with your operation. Modular designs support upgrades and expansions more efficiently.
5. Support and Service
Ensure the manufacturer provides robust after-sales support, technical training, and warranty services.
Cost vs. Quality: The Bottom Line
When it comes to switchgear, cheap is rarely cheerful. Cutting corners today can lead to outages, hazards, and hefty repair bills tomorrow. On the other hand, investing in high-quality switchgear ensures operational resilience, safety, and long-term savings.
The smartest strategy? Aim for value, not just price. Evaluate switchgear as a long-term asset, not just a one-time purchase.
Trending Tip: Think Smart and Sustainable
With rising energy demands and climate-conscious regulations, smart and sustainable switchgear is trending. Look for:
· Eco-friendly insulation (like SF₆-free switchgear)
· Energy management features
· Digital monitoring systems
Investing in such features not only future-proofs your infrastructure but can also help you qualify for green certifications and incentives.
Final Thoughts
Balancing cost and quality in switchgear selection is about understanding your long-term operational goals. By focusing on durability, safety, and lifecycle value, you can make a decision that protects both your budget and your business.

Tortog Swampgoons and Hillhulks:

The Tortog home planet is inhabited by two close relatives of the Tortog species, Swampgoons and Hillhulks. These creatures are obviously separate species to Tortogs, but are close enough that eating them is forbidden as cannibalism by the Tortog religion, as well as killing them without reason enough to kill another Tortog.
Swampgoons are typically half the height of a Tortog at a comparable life stage, and are significantly weaker, lighter, and less intelligent than their cousins. They have a maximum lifespan of about thirty years, going through the same general lifecycle as a Tortog at thrice the speed. They have spongy tissue in their limbs that makes them wide and buoyant and allows them to swim in water and climb trees and hills with ease. They lack the three top horns of a Tortog, and have a much larger and pointier beak. They have a ridge of bristles on the sides of their body, and down the sides of their limbs, and the spikes of their back plates are narrow and conical.

Unlike Tortogs, Swampgoons have a Tapetum Lucitum in their eyes which gives them excellent night vision and reflects pale yellow in the darkness.
Swampgoons exhibit very basic tool use, hitting things with unworked rocks, and probing with reeds. Their most impressive tool use is Goon Boats, which is their common practice of riding on floating logs to hide out in the deep sections of lakes during the day, and ride them to shore at night to raid farms and settlements. (Swampgoon raids are not violent affairs, though they can make messes and are a nuisance. Comparable to raccoons or monkeys.)

As their name suggests, Swampgoons typically live in swamps and wetlands (Tortogs prefer rocky and sandy coasts that better support their weight), but will also be found in forest canopies and in caves in high cliffs. Pretty much on any terrain that can't support Tortog weight (they are a very successful relative with a partitioned niche as you can tell). However they will frequently take up residence on the outskirts of Tortog communities, sometimes even in the rafters and roofs of buildings.
A major responsibility of Tortog police (reminder: Tortog police are different from the police of humans. Police are typically teenagers and their role is to patrol the community and report and investigate unusual occurrences, damage to property and infrastructure, find missing items, and escort and monitor visitors. Guards and Posses apprehend criminals and are distinguished from police.) is keeping an eye out for Swampgoons and frightening them away.

Opinions about Swampgoons vary between communities, with some hating them, and others finding them funny, beneficial, or even sacred. Swampgoons will eat water cabbages, but prefer bugs. In areas without cabbagebug problems, Swampgoons are a pest, but in regions with lots of cabbagebugs, the Swampgoons nibbling the leaves is outweighed by the pest control they provide. In some places, Tortog children are introduced to construction by building houses for Swampgoons. These typically built on a sandbar and have a brick foundation with a vault tunnel running through it, an elevated cabin with rope lattices, and a seed+leave wildflower garden on top, and are a decorative element of traditional Tortog architecture.

These are sometimes even built and maintained in places that do consider Swampgoons pests, with the idea that it provides a safe adversary for young Tortogs to learn guardsmanship against.

Swampgoons don't have a decipherable language, but communicate through honks, squeaks, and beak clacking, as well as through slapping the ground/water and grabbing at one another.
Hillhulks are the other closest relative of Tortogs, and are much more dangerous, but thankfully live far from the coasts and wet lowlands where Tortogs make their homes.

Hillhulks live in the forested mountains of the Tortog home planet, where they eat pretty much anything they can, with a preference for berries, roots, bug hives, and large animals. They are the least social of the three Tortog family members, and are quite territorial.
They are massive, muscular quadrupeds with sharp beak, long limbs, and four spikes going down their back which get longer the closer they get to the rear. Their body is round and covered with long, rough bristles, with armored plates on their back and belly. Their arms bare massive claws capable of rending wood, stone, and frozen dirt. They can rear up on their hind legs, but are primarily quadrupedal.

Hillhulks are clever when they need to be, and likely have similar intelligence to Swampgoons. This is difficult to measure though because they rarely encounter problems they can't solve with their claws and bulk.

Substratum Protocol, the Solo+ Apocalyptic Mystery TTRPG by Pandion Games
The Substratum Protocol campaign is nearing its end! There are less than 24 hours left to join over 600 scientists on the expedition to save the planet!
If you haven’t yet, check out the campaign before it’s too late!
There have been some fun updates since launch, including additional artwork by Galen Pejeau, new rules for environmental hazards, and a big story update!
If you want to see what the game is about, we also have a free preview PDF for you on the campaign page.
An Anomaly
During our interview with Rascal News, we realized we had made a fundamental mistake in writing an open-ended mystery: We said what was at the core of the planet, an interdimensional portal. The portal being is now just one possibility. We spent last weekend updating all the writing to now be an anomaly. The otherworldly abilities you get from taking stress are now Anomaly Influences, rather than Portal Influences, for instance. The Expedition can still decide it's a portal, but calling it an anomaly opens up a huge range of possibilities. What is the anomaly that's splitting the earth open?
Is it a massive cosmic egg hatching a world eater as part of a natural lifecycle?
Did an advance interstellar ship accidentally exit hyperspace at the center of the planet due to a miscalculation, and its damaged engines are holding open a hyperspace bubble?
Is there a cult of advanced species calling forth eldritch gods with a powerful ritual that consumes planets to power it?
Substratum Protocol is about letting the clues and your answers determine what is really happening, and we think this update opens the floodgates for it.
Depth Sector Deep Dives
In our campaign updates, we have been talking about the different sectors players can visit and their inspiration. These are all available publicly on the campaign - but we wanted to share the Fracture Opening sector with you here.
How the Depth Sectors Work
Substratum Protocol is a collaborative mystery game. The text gives hints and whispers of possibilities, but strays away from definite answers. What you discover and imagine at your table becomes canon to the story and the setting. Each sector shows its location in the Fracture, includes in-universe handwritten notes from an unknown scientist, relevant art, and a table of events - each giving a glimpse into what the sector contains. Scientists can spend as much or as little time in a Sector as they want. When they're ready to venture deeper, whoever leads the way rolls for the Travel Action.
The Fracture Opening

This is the first sector of the expedition experiences. At 1,300 kilometers long, it covers the distance between New York City to Miami, Florida. London, England to Naples, Italy. Melbourne, Australia to Alice Springs. Buenos Aires, Argentina to São Paulo, Brazil. It is massive. Where did the fracture open in your game? What exists teetering at its cliff walls? The world at the surface is a hellscape of the apocalypse, and much of the Fracture Opening is littered with crumbling buildings, detritus, and ancillary debris of civilization. Oceans spilling over the edge seem small in scale. Sitting suspended over it, is the Fracture Observatory. The Fracture Observatory, the home of Mission Control.
Furthest from the anomaly, this sector is rooted most in the reality of the surface. Here, players may find groups of survivors from the cities that tumbled into the great fracture, steam vents, cave ins, and earthquakes make finding solid footing and a reliable path difficult, and even here, strange subterranean creatures may make an appearance. Old research stations, part of the Substratum Protocol's monitoring efforts may still be intact here, and dangerous fast flowing waters threaten to whisk away scientists into massive whirlpools to further below. When we were first designing Substratum Protocol, the thought was that players would start in the action of the expedition and wouldn't really spend time on the Fracture Observatory or on the surface. The Fracture Opening was our way of showing what the surface was going through while still being en route. It is meant to showcase the incredible destruction happening, and give the players a sense of urgency to stop it from getting worse. How do the scientists descend into the fracture before being left to their own power? Lowered on a cable lift? Paraglide down? Or perhaps they are more like hell jumpers, free-falling through the gargantuan opening (or Link entering the depths in Tears of the Kingdom!)?
The title screen fades to klaxon alarms and screams of the world above, slowly giving way to a deafening silence of rushing wind as the expedition descends past the cliff walls into the abyssal black depths of the Fracture Opening...
Join the Expedition!

Meteosat-12 begins prime service duty
A new chapter in European weather and climate monitoring begins as EUMETSAT's Meteosat-12 satellite, formerly Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) Imager 1, takes up the baton from Meteosat-10 to deliver Europe's prime data service from geostationary orbit.
Orbiting at an altitude of around 36,000 kilometers, Meteosat-12 is the first imaging satellite in the MTG program and now moves into its key position above the equator at 0° longitude, directly over the Gulf of Guinea.
From its lofty vantage point, Meteosat-12 is now the main source of near-real-time geostationary satellite data for Europe, Africa and the surrounding oceans. Data from its instruments are distributed to national meteorological services in EUMETSAT member states and beyond, with improved detail and timeliness—as well as new observations such as lightning data—giving weather forecasters additional confidence in their predictions.
Phil Evans, Director-General of EUMETSAT, said, "Meteosat-12 now takes responsibility for delivering Europe's prime geostationary satellite service, ensuring continuity and delivering enhanced capabilities at a time when severe weather events are becoming more frequent due to the climate crisis.
"The MTG system marks a new era in weather forecasting, providing data that support everything from improving severe weather warnings and enhancing transport safety to wildfire response and air quality hazard assessments.
"Once the full MTG constellation is operational, it will, for the first time, allow us to observe the entire lifecycle of a convective storm—from the earliest signs before clouds begin to form to the detection of lightning strikes. These data help forecasters, emergency services, and civil authorities respond more rapidly and effectively to protect lives, property, and infrastructure."
Launched on 13 December 2022, Meteosat-12 scans the full Earth disk every 10 minutes, delivering data more frequently and in sharper detail than its predecessor. It carries two main instruments: the Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) and Lightning Imager (LI).
The FCI delivers imaging data in twice as many spectral channels than its predecessor and with an improved spatial resolution, providing more detailed views of fast-changing weather such as storms, fog, and rapidly forming clouds.
The satellite also carries the LI, Europe's first space-based instrument to detect lightning across Europe and Africa, day and night, helping forecasters assess storm development, intensity, and risk.
The MTG program will run into the 2040s and includes six satellites: four imagers and two sounders. The first MTG sounder, MTG-S1, will launch in summer 2025 and provide vertical profiles of temperature and humidity from geostationary orbit—another first for Europe.
Combined with data from MTG imagers and next-generation Metop satellites, it will enhance short-range forecasting by enabling specialists to track storms throughout their entire lifecycle and supplying data to further enhance weather models.
As EUMETSAT deploys the MTG satellites, those of the Meteosat Second Generation will continue to play an important role in EUMETSAT's constellation for years to come.
Meteosat-10 will now assume a supporting role, continuing imaging services as a ready backup for Meteosat-12. Meteosat-11 delivers rapid scans every five minutes over Europe and North Africa and can also support the prime service if needed. Meteosat-9 remains positioned over the Indian Ocean, providing vital data to regions vulnerable to cyclones and monsoons.
Gareth Williams, Head of Flight Operations at EUMETSAT, said, "Meteosat-12 now provides the prime service within a coordinated constellation of satellites that ensures continuity, reliability and resilience, while introducing important new capabilities.
"Seeing the spacecraft take responsibility for Europe's prime geostationary service is a major operational achievement, reflecting years of dedicated work across EUMETSAT, our member states and partners. With more MTG satellites to come, we look forward to an even greater impact from the constellation in delivering vital data for forecasting, climate monitoring and other essential services and applications."

Why is insurance eligibility verification important for medical practices?
Insurance Eligibility Verification Services
Insurance Eligibility Verification is one of the essential steps in the revenue cycle or lifecycle management of any medical practice and operations and for better proceedings it is a must. It involves confirming a patient's insurance details—such as active coverage, co-pays, deductibles, and policy limitations—before services are provided. However, it may seem like a routine and common task, as this stage plays a significant role in ensuring a smooth operational process, financial stability, and understanding for healthcare providers and settings that serve the industry.
Prevents Claim Denials and Payment Delays:
One of the biggest and significant challenges in medical billing is dealing and maintaining support and facing options with claim denials and delayed payments. Many of these issues arise from incomplete or outdated insurance information. By verifying and monitoring the insurance eligibility in advance, practices can avoid and lose the scope of providing services to patients whose coverage is inactive or insufficient, leading to faster reimbursements and fewer and fewer billing errors and glitches as compared to other processes.
Enhances Patient Satisfaction:
Clear communication and approach about coverage aids the patients to understand their financial responsibilities before the treatment begins and starts. This reduces and lowers the thought of confusion, crafts and, raises trust, and improves the overall patient experience. Insurance eligibility verification ensures that both the provider or the company and the patient itself are on the same page as if for the options of co-pays, deductibles, and coverage limits.
Saves Time and Administrative Costs:
When insurance verification is done before the appointment, staff spend less time chasing payments or correcting claims. This allows and grants the front-office teams and mates to focus more on patient care and less on back-and-forth with insurance providers as a hassle free initiative. Efficient Insurance Eligibility Verification also reduces and lowers the rework and resubmissions, decreasing the excessive burning of operational costs.
Supports Efficient Scheduling and Resource Use:
Knowing the patient's coverage and limit brackets status ahead of time helps in better appointment planning with complete utilization of resources with better allocation. As the medical practices can schedule procedures with confidence, knowing that the billing will be processed correctly and promptly.
Choosing the Right Support -
Many practices and operations work with experienced partners and professional experts to handle and maintain this critical task. Trusted companies like Suma Soft, IBM, Cyntexa, and Cignex offer and are engaged in streamlined insurance eligibility verification services, ensuring real-time accuracy and helping medical practices maintain steady revenue flow and patient satisfaction.

Sustainable Building Practices Reshaping Our Future

Construction has always evolved with the times, but today's innovations are driven by an urgent need: creating buildings that work with our planet, not against it. As the construction industry in Australia faces growing environmental challenges, new approaches are emerging that promise both sustainability and practicality.
Why Sustainable Building Matters Now
Climate change isn't something that's coming—it's here. The building sector accounts for nearly 40% of global carbon emissions, making it a critical area for improvement. But beyond environmental concerns, sustainable construction offers tangible benefits for builders, owners, and occupants alike:
Lower operating costs through reduced energy consumption
Healthier indoor environments for occupants
Greater resilience against extreme weather events
Enhanced property values and marketability
Meeting increasingly strict building codes and regulations
Game-Changing Materials Transforming Construction
Rethinking Concrete
Concrete has been our go-to building material for centuries, but its environmental impact is substantial. New alternatives are gaining traction:
Green Concrete incorporates recycled materials like fly ash, slag, and crushed glass to reduce its carbon footprint without sacrificing strength. Some formulations capture and store CO2 during curing, turning a carbon source into a carbon sink.
Hemp-Based Building Materials combine hemp fiber with lime to create lightweight, insulating materials that actually sequester carbon. These "hempcrete" products offer excellent thermal performance while being naturally resistant to mold and pests.
Recycled and Upcycled Options
From reclaimed timber to repurposed shipping containers, builders are finding creative ways to give materials a second life. Not only does this reduce waste, but it often results in buildings with unique character and lower embodied carbon.
Smart Design Approaches
Passive House Principles
The Passive House standard focuses on creating ultra-efficient buildings that maintain comfortable temperatures with minimal heating or cooling. Key features include:
Super-insulated building envelopes
Airtight construction with controlled ventilation
Strategic window placement for solar gain management
Thermal bridge-free design
Originally developed for residential buildings, these principles are now being applied to commercial and industrial structures with impressive results.
Biophilic Design
Humans have an innate connection to nature, and biophilic design leverages this relationship to create buildings that support wellbeing. Natural lighting, indoor plants, natural materials, and views of outdoor greenery don't just make spaces more pleasant—they've been shown to reduce stress, improve productivity, and even speed healing in healthcare settings.
Technology's Growing Role
Building Information Modeling (BIM)
BIM technology allows designers to create detailed digital twins of buildings before construction begins. This enables:
Optimization of material usage to reduce waste
Analysis of energy performance under different conditions
Better coordination between trades to prevent costly mistakes
Lifecycle assessment of different design options
Energy Management Systems
Modern buildings are increasingly equipped with sophisticated systems that monitor and optimize energy use in real time. These systems can adjust lighting, heating, cooling, and ventilation based on occupancy patterns and environmental conditions, dramatically reducing energy consumption without sacrificing comfort.
Certifications Raising the Bar
Various certification programs provide frameworks for sustainable building. While LEED has been the most widely recognized, newer systems like Living Building Challenge and WELL are pushing boundaries by focusing on regenerative design and human health impacts.
What's Coming Next?
The future of sustainable building lies in approaches that go beyond merely reducing harm to actively benefiting ecosystems. Concepts gaining momentum include:
Living Buildings that generate more energy than they use, capture and treat their own water, and are constructed from non-toxic, locally sourced materials.
Mass Timber Construction using engineered wood products like cross-laminated timber (CLT) to replace steel and concrete in mid-rise and even high-rise buildings, substantially reducing embodied carbon.
3D Printed Structures that minimize waste through precise material application and can utilize local soil and recycled materials as printing media.
Making Sustainable Building Mainstream
Despite clear benefits, barriers to widespread adoption remain, including higher upfront costs, knowledge gaps, and outdated regulations. However, these obstacles are gradually falling as:
More builders gain experience with sustainable techniques
Supply chains for green materials expand
Building codes evolve to encourage innovation
Clients increasingly demand sustainable options
For industry professionals looking to stay ahead of the curve, investing in sustainability knowledge and partnerships with experienced consultants can provide a competitive edge in a rapidly changing market.
As we face the challenges of climate change and resource constraints, sustainable building isn't just an option—it's becoming the only sensible way forward for the construction industry. By embracing these emerging practices, we can create buildings that are not only kinder to our planet but better for the people who use them every day.

Emerald Ash Borer - Roswell Pest Threat

Keep an Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infestation from decimating the ash trees in your yard and neighborhood. Recognizing infestation signs and knowing who to call can save countless trees in the Georgia landscape.

New Image Tree Solutions gathered Emerald Ash Borer beetle information, the threat to trees, infestation signs, prevention measures, and who to call when there is a confirmed infestation.
What is Emerald Ash Borer?
Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) is a small, metallic-green beetle that may appear harmless at first glance. However, its larvae tunnel under tree bark, disrupting nutrient and water flow within the tree. This internal damage eventually leads to tree decline and death. The beetle is particularly lethal because its feeding habits are challenging to detect until significant damage has occurred.
The Threat to Ash Trees

EAB poses a severe threat (to ash trees) due to its rapid spread and destructive lifecycle. In less than a decade, millions of ash trees have been killed across North America. In Roswell, Georgia, this pest jeopardizes the health and beauty of local landscapes. EAB attacks all ash species, stripping trees of vitality and leaving behind skeletonized trunks.
Note: Ash tree species are inherently more susceptible to boring insects due to a lack of tannins in the tree’s sap (sap is the tree’s defense against intruders and tannins make tree sap undesirable to boring insects).
Why EAB is So Deadly

EAB larvae feed extensively on the inner bark, disrupting the vascular system essential for tree survival. When visible symptoms appear - like canopy thinning, bark splitting, and wood peeking through - the damage is extensive and irreversible. The beetle’s lifecycle allows multiple generations annually in warmer climates, accelerating the infestation process. This rapid reproduction and feeding pattern make EAB one of the most destructive pests targeting ash trees.
Ash Tree Species in Roswell, Georgia

In Roswell, several ash species are common. Five notable species include:
Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica)
White Ash (Fraxinus americana)
Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra)
Blue Ash (Fraxinus quadrangulata)
Manchurian Ash (Fraxinus mandshurica)
Each species plays a role in local ecosystems, providing shade, habitat, and aesthetic value.
Preventive Measures Against EAB

Preventing EAB infestation requires proactive steps and continuous monitoring. Homeowners and municipalities should consider the following measures:
Regular Inspections: Schedule frequent visual inspections during spring and summer. Look for D-shaped exit holes, serpentine galleries under bark, and canopy thinning.
Chemical Treatments: Apply systemic insecticides in early spring when EAB activity begins. Consult with certified arborists to determine proper treatment intervals.
Biological Controls: Explore releasing parasitic wasps that target EAB larvae. Research on these natural enemies continues, and some programs already show promising results.
Quarantine Regulations: Follow local guidelines restricting firewood movement and other wood materials that could harbor EAB larvae.
When to Call an Arborist

Professional arborists should be contacted immediately if an EAB infestation is suspected. Signs include:
D-shaped exit holes in bark
Rapid decline in canopy density
Excessive wood peeking through bark layers
Visible larval galleries during bark inspection
Arborists can confirm diagnosis, suggest treatments, and recommend containment measures. Early intervention may save some trees, but heavily infested ones may require removal to prevent spread.
EAB Infested Trees - Removal and Destruction

When a tree becomes too heavily infested (or poses a risk to surrounding structures), tree removal is necessary. The process involves:
Assessment: Arborists conduct thorough assessments to determine the tree's condition.
Permitting: Obtain necessary permits from local authorities before removal.
Safe Removal: Employ specialized equipment to safely remove the tree, minimizing risks to property and public safety.
Destruction: Infested wood should be chipped or incinerated (following local regulations) to prevent re-infestation. Proper disposal is critical to contain EAB spread.
EAB-Resistant Tree Species

As EAB continues to devastate ash populations, replacing vulnerable trees with resistant species is a strategic long-term solution. Five recommended alternatives include:
Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)
Southern Live Oak (Quercus virginiana)
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
Red Maple (Acer rubrum)
Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera)
These species not only bring diversity but also enhance the resilience of urban forests against invasive pests.
Documentation and Reporting

When EAB outbreaks occur, comprehensive documentation is essential. Arborists and municipal agencies compile detailed reports that include:
Visual evidence through photographs and videos
Data on tree health and infestation levels
Treatment and removal recommendations
Impact assessments on urban green space
These reports support decision-making by community leaders and help coordinate regional response strategies.
